Griffitt - W.C. "Griff" Griffitt , 89-year-old Leonard resident, passed away in March 2010. He had a masters of science degree and he worked for many years as a vocational agricultural teacher for the Leonard Independent School District.

Barham - John R. Barham, of Mexia, Texas, passed away on July 14, 2010. He was educated in Mexia and graduated from Sam Houston State University with a Masters of Education. John taught school in Mildred and Mexia for a total of 29 years. He also owned a feed store in Mexia and was a rancher.

Hooper - Arnold Hooper, of Joaquin, Texas, passed away on Friday, June 18, 2010 at the age of 99. He is survived by his wife Annie. In lieu of flowers, family request donations can be made to the Arnold Hooper Scholarship Fund Joaquin Alumni Association, deposits can be made at Texas State Bank.

Dingler - James Edward Dingler passed away on June 15, 2010, in Dallas. He was born July 6, 1945, in Athens, and was a lifelong resident of Henderson County and LaRue area. He was a member of First Assembly of God and a retired teacher with the Brownsboro Independent School District for 28 years. He served in the Army during the Vietnam War.

He was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather and will be greatly missed.Survivors include his wife, Mickie Dingler of LaRue; daughters, Melissa Boyd and husband Chris of Chandler, and Anne McIntyre and husband Wade of Brownsboro; brothers, Billy Dingler of Austin and Jimmy Dingler of LaRue; sisters, Nancy Snowden and husband Stanley of Hurst; grandchildren, Charlie Stringer, Chris Stringer, Taylor McIntyre, Madie McIntyre, Emma McIntyre, Jake Boyd and Joey Boyd.
 
Services were held Friday, June 18, 2010, at First Assembly of God Church, Chandler, with Pastor Mickey Ellis officiating. Burial was in New York Cemetery near LaRue, under direction of Chandler Memorial Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to First Assembly of God Chandler Youth Building Fund, 840 N. Broad St., Chandler, 75758.

Parker - Nolan O. Parker, 83, of Stanton, died on Wednesday, April 14, 2010, in a Midland hospital. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM, Monday, April 19, 2010, at First Baptist Church with Rev. David Harp, pastor, officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery.

He was born on December 1, 1926, in Vera, Texas and married Martha Christine Rankin on December 25,1960, in Amherst, Texas. She preceded him in death on December 22, 2002. Nolan was raised in Benjamin, Texas. He served in the United States Army and later in the United States Air Force. He attended and graduated from Texas A & M University. Nolan taught a Vocational Agricultural classes in Dell City before moving to Stanton in 1961, where he taught until retiring in 1985. He then served as Justice of the Peace for Martin County for eight years. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Stanton. Survivors include his loving companion, Willa Jo Yater of Stanton; two sons and daughters-in-law, Louis and June Parker of Reno, Nevada and John and Lona Parker of Huntsville, Alabama; five grandchildren, Caleb Parker, Josh Parker and Nathan Parker all of Reno, Nevada, Zoe Parker of Huntsville, Alabama and Kevin Parker of Stephenville; and two sisters, Dorothy West of Dallas and Bonnie Garrett of Lafayette, Louisiana. He was also preceded in death by a son, Richard Parker in 1995; and two brothers and one sister. The family suggests memorials be made to Cal Farley's Boys Ranch, P. O. Barrett - Pat Barrett, 57, of Washington, Texas, passed away on Saturday, April 3, 2010. Pat taught agriculture science at Bovina, Blanco, Coronado and Monterey. He was employed by the Texas Extension Service Fire Safety Unit in College Station. Memorial services are set for Friday, April 9, at Central Baptist Church in College Station and May 1 in Spur.

Bartz - Logan Edward Bartz, 78, of Round Rock, Texas, passed away in his home on March 25, 2010. He was born on July 1, 1931 in Bartlett, Texas, to parents, Ed and Nora Bartz. He grew up on a farm, along with five brothers and five sisters. On December 27, 1955, he married Bonnie Ruth Adams/Arredondo where they settled in Round Rock, Texas, to raise their family. Before retirement Logan loved and was a very active and dedicated Agriculture Teacher in the Hutto, Pflugerville, and Round Rock- Westwood School Districts.

He was predeceased by his parents, his wife, his sister Ruby Grimmett, and his brothers Edward and Gene Bartz. Logan is survived by his son, Mike Bartz and wife Cindy, of San Marcos; daughter, Susan McLaughlin and husband Richard, of Round Rock; granddaughter, Heather Egbert and husband Trevor; and grandsons, Marty McLaughlin and Tanner and Talon Bartz. He is also survived by sisters, Myrtle Volney, Margie Lovellette, Doris Mosley, Shirley Liles; and brothers, Lester Bartz, Howard Bartz and Kenith Bartz.

Logan was a loving and supportive brother, husband, father, and grandfather. He enjoyed family, dancing, fishing, animals, and being outdoors. Logan was also a member of the U.S. Army, serving in Germany. Visitation will be held Tuesday, March 30, 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m., at Beck Funeral Home, 1700 E White Stone Blvd., Cedar Park, Texas. Service will be held Wednesday, March 31, 2:00 p.m., at Palm Valley Lutheran Church, 2500 E. Palm Valley Blvd., Round Rock, TX. Interment will follow at Capital Memorial Park, Austin, TX. Beck Hibbert Beck, 72, devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend passed from this Life to his new Home on Wednesday, March 10, 2010.

He was born on October 11, 1937 in Dallas, Texas to Lee and Ima (Hibbert) Beck. He graduated from Ferris High School in 1956. He attended Texas A & M University and received his Bachelors and Masters degrees in education from Sam Houston State College. On February 1, 1957 he married Marylou Cole and they made their home in Huntsville before moving to Palmer in 1960.

He taught Agriculture Science for thirty-five years in Palmer and was a custom home builder for fifteen years. He was a member of the Palmer Lions Club for over forty-five years and served in every officer position. He was on the board of directors of: Ennis-Palmer FFA shows, Ellis County Youth Expo Show and Sale, Ellis County Junior Livestock Association, Ellis County Junior Rodeo Association, Rockett SUD, Vocational Agriculture Teachers Association of Texas, Palmer Economic Development Council and Texas Modena Club. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Palmer for over fifty years.

He is survived by his wife, Marylou Beck; one son Wes Beck and his wife, Lisa of Shamrock; two daughters; Jeannie Lee of Stephenville and Julie Butler and her husband, Ronney of Palmer; six grandchildren: Leslie and Amy Beck, Cassi St. Clair and her husband, Bret, Teresa Lee, Lucas and Mallory Butler; one great grandchild Callee St. Clair: one sister, Gloria Sullivan of Waxahachie and many other family members. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Estes Parks and her family Bobby, Robby and LeeAnn and one son-in-law David Lee.

Visitation will be on Thursday, March 11, 2010 from 6 until 8 p.m. at J.E. Keever Mortuary in Ennis. A Memorial service will be Friday, March 12, 2010 at 3 p.m. in the Palmer High School Gym with a reception to follow under the direction of J.E. Keever Mortuary, Inc. Pall bearers will be Lucas Butler, Bret St Clair, Patrick Sullivan, Jason Toomey, Neal Green and Phillip Green. Honorary pall bearers will be past and present Palmer High School FFA officers.

Gipson - John 'Pete' Gipson, 69, passed away on Saturday, January 23, 2010 in Longview. Gipson was an Ag teacher with Harmony ISD before his career with Texas Farm Bureau.
 
Kountz - Lillian Kountz passed away on Monday, January 18, 2010. Lillian was married to Chris Kountz who was the VATAT President from 1983 - 1984. Her services will be held Thursday, January 21, 2010 at 10:00 a.m.
 
Buford- Lester Buford passed away on Monday November 9, 2009 in Kerrville, Texas. Lester was an Honorary Life member of the VATAT. Amann- Max Amann, age 91, of Utopia passed away on February 13, 2009 in San Antonio, Texas. He was born on November 13, 1917 in San Antonio to Max Walter and Laura Helen Amann. Max was a vocational agriculture teacher in Utopia for 38 years where he taught several father-son combinations, including his own two sons and a nephew. He retired after several successful years of teaching in 1980.
 
Cobb
John Cobb, age 84, of Quinlan passed away Thursday, August 6th at his residence. After receiving his bachelor's degree from Sam Houston State, he took his first teaching job at Bland High School. For over 40 years, he taught school, coached a variety of sports and served in other administrative positions.


Overstreet
Neil was the son of Wilburn and Ruby Overstreet, born 3/30/42 in Gorman, Texas. He attended Tarleton State College for two years and graduated from Sam Houston State University in 1964 with a BS in Agricultural Education, later completing a Masters of Education and Vocational Supervisor Certification. He taught Vocational Agriculture for 13 years at Madisonville High School before he joined IMS (Instructional Materials Service) at Texas A&M University as a curriculum specialist. He served as Associate Professor and Coordinator of IMS from 1990 until his retirement in 1997. His entire career was devoted to Agricultural Education as a high school teacher, trainer of teachers, and a writer and developer of teaching materials for agriculture and science teachers in Texas and the nation. He was recognized for distinguished service by both FFA and Vocational Agriculture Teachers Association of Texas. More important to him were the relationships with students, fellow teachers, State staff, and fellow employees at TAMU. He was known both as a leader and team player, always dependable and knowledgeable, and one you wanted on your side whether at work or play.

 

Womble

Samuel Marion Womble, 58, of San Antonio, passed away, August 13, 2009. Samuel was a Vocational Agriculture Science Teacher for 31 years in McAllen, Santa Rosa, James Madison High School, Stroman High School and Smithson Valley High School in Comal County. He also received recognition and many awards for his work in the Vocational Agriculture field. He was involved with the San Antonio Livestock Show where he was a ringman for the auction. He was called on to judge numerous county shows, some as recently as January 2009. In 2006, Sam was honored by having the Smithson Valley Animal Project Facility named after him. In the last four years, Sam raised show steers for youngsters and enjoyed seeing their faces light up when they got to pick their show animals. He was also occupied with writing a book about his life which he recently completed.

 

Pettit
Darwin Kirk Pettit, 95, of Gustine, passed away, April 24, 2009. Kirk was a Vocational Agriculture Teacher for 21 years at Mission, Donna, Rosser, Gustine and Whitesboro ISD; and was then appointed as Area Supervisor in Vocational Education for the TEA and served in the TEA for 22 years. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Corpus Christi. Also, Kirk was a member of Retired Teachers Association and a member of the VATAT. Kirk was listed in Who's Who in America, awarded FFA Lone Star Farmer Degree, FFA American Farmer Degree and received citation from the U.S. Department of Education.

Harris
Hulan H. Harris, 81, of Burkett, passed away, June 1, 2009. His desire to improve public education, and be a responsible part of that accomplishment was a continual priority. Dedication for youth to achieve was demonstrated by his years of service with the Texas State Fair, the Fort Worth Stock Show and Texas State Education programs. He was a teacher and state supervisor for the Texas State Department of Education for many years. Services will be held June 4, 2009 at the Burkett Community Cenetery in Burkett, TX.

Carleston
John Carleston, 73, of Louise, passed away, Monday, May 18, 2009. He taught vocational agriculture at Crescent High School for 1959-1960 and at Louise High School from 1960-1992. He organized the Louise Young Farmers Chapter, served on the VATAT board of directors for five years. Funeral services will be Thursday, May 21 at 2:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church in El Campo. Burial will follow at Gardent of Memories Cemetery in El Campo. Memorial donations may be made to Louise First Baptist Church or John Carleston FFA Scholarship.

Mitchell
D.D. Mitchell, 85, of Canton, passed away Tuesday, May 12, 2009 at his home in Canton. After serving in the Navy he earned his masters's degree from Sam Houston State University in Huntsville. Mitchell taught agriculutre science in the Canton School District for 35 years. Services are scheduled for 4:00 p.m. Thursday, May 12, 2009.

Morgan
Ira Jack Morgan, 77, died Wednesday, April 8, 2009 in Galveston County. As a graduate of West Texas State University and Texas Tech University, he taught in Adrian, Channling and Briscoe. He shared his love of teaching with his students for more than 20 years. Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 11, 2009 at the First Baptist Church in Wellington. The family suggests memorials be to Cal Farley Boys Ranch Alumni Association, PO Box 1890 Amarillo, TX 79174; or American Cancer Society Relay for Life, PO Box 22718 Oklahoma City, OL 73123-1718.

Dossett
Glen Dossett's mother, Esther Dossett, passed away March 6 at 90 years old. Glen has taught agriculture science for 42 years, currently at Mineola High School.

Watson
Jacob Getsondanner "Get" Watson, 76, died Monday, Feb. 9, 2009, in Amarillo. Jacob was the vocational ag teacher from 1957 to 1990 with Panhandle ISD, and taught two years before that in Wheeler. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in First Baptist Church in Panhandle. Burial will be in Panhandle Cemetery by Minton/Chatwell Funeral Directors. The family suggests memorials be to J.G. "Get" Watson Scholarship College of Agriculture Sciences at Texas Tech University; or "Get" Watson Memorial Ag Scholarship Fund for Panhandle High School Students, in care of Happy State Bank, P.O. Box 990, Panhandle, TX 79068. 

 

Ivy
Danny Ivy passed away Thursday, February 5, 2009, in Lubbock, Texas. Services for Mr. Ivy will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, February 9, in the Hale Center High School Auditorium. Family burial will follow in the Hale Center Cemetery. Mr. Ivy taught agriculture science for 39 years: four years in Farwell, Texas, and the remainder at Hale Center High School. Mr. Ivy also worked with the Texas FFA Convention. The family suggests memorials be sent to the Danny Ivy Scholarship Fund, c/o Vista Bank, 701 Main Street, Hale Center, Texas 79041.

 

Jekel
Dr. Eugene Jekel, a former agriculture teacher and professor at Texas A&I University (now Texas A&M, Kingsville) passed away December 18, 2008. Visitation from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. on Dec. 23 at Doeppenschmidt Funeral Home, New Braunfels and graveside services at Ft.Sam in San Antonio. at 2 p.m. Dec. 23.

Widner
Lawrence Widner passed away on December 1, 2008. Widner received his Bachelor's Degree in Agriculture Education from NMSU. He served as New Mexico State FFA President in 1954. In 1975 Lawrence moved to Bovian, where he continued teaching and raising show pigs. He retired from teaching in 1999. Services will be held at 1 p.m. December 4, 2008 at Bovina Church of Christ.

Krenek
Troy Krenek passed away November 30, 2008 in Grimes County. Mr. and Mrs. Krenek moved to Garwood in 1948 where Krenek enjoyed a successful 30-year career as vocational agriculture teacher at Garwood High School and later Rice Consolidated. He retired from teaching in 1983 after proudly teaching three generations of Garwood students. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, December 5th at the Henneke Funeral Home in Columbus.


Kuretsch
Gilbert Edmund Kuretsch of Pleasanton passed away Friday, November 14, 2008, in Jourdanton at the age of 78 after a lifetime of educating youth and serving his community. As an educator for 47 years, Kuretsch touched thousands of lives in the town of Pleasanton and across the state. In lieu of flowers the family is requesting donations be made to Pleasanton Rotary Club Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 835, Pleasanton, Texas 78064-0656. Ed Landry Jr. passed away on October 27, 2008

Park
Keith Park, long time agriculture teacher and FFA sponsor and supporter, passed away on October 5, 2008. He is survived by his son Kincade Park of Austin and daughter Anna Park of Arlington. Keith knew most of the agriculture teachers in Texas and several  have asked about how to make contributions. The family has asked for donations to a scholarship to be awarded in his memory to an FFA member at Goldberg High School where he was teaching.  Anyone interested in contributing is encouraged to send donations to the City National Bank, Keith Park Scholarship, 1133 Mockingbird Lane, Sulphur Springs, Texas 75482.

Boyd
Chester Boyd passed away on July 25, 2008. He was 95 years old. Chester was a vocational agriculture teacher for over 40 years, most of which was spent teaching at Lewisville High School. He retired from Lewisville in 1975 after 33 years of teaching. The funeral is scheduled for Tuesday, July 29 at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Lewisville.
