Did you know that at least 100 children in the United States die in farm-related work each year. Twenty percent of youth farm injuries in the U.S. are animal related and youth that live on farms/ranches with livestock production have significantly higher injury rates than youth living on crop farms.

The DVD, Right from the Start: Safety Awareness for the Next Generation of Livestock Producers, was developed to educate youth handlers and their families on practical strategies for preventing injuries.

Chapters include:
Introduction-featuring personal injury stories from youth handlers
Safety Basics
Beef Cattle
Production Cattle
Dairy Cattle
Cattle Trailers
Production Horses
Horse Trailers

Right from the Start was a collaborative effort between the Southwest Center for Agricultural Health, Injury Prevention and Education; Texas AgriLife Extension and Texas A&M University; The University of Arkansas; Louisiana State University Ag Center; New Mexico State University; and the Southern Plains Animal Hospital in Oklahoma.

This special dissemination to Texas Ag Teachers was made possible through funding from the Houston Livestock Show and RodeoTM and the Vocational Ag Teachers Association of Texas. If you need additional copies, please contact Amanda at 903-877-5998 or by email to agcenter@uthct.edu.
